(TruthAndLiberty.com) – On Tuesday, former First Lady Michelle Obama made a surprise appearance in Washington, D.C., Virginia, and Maryland to celebrate children on college Signing Day.

In her remarks, she pointed out that this was a day that was about looking at the future and she wanted to take this moment to reflect with all of the students about the hard road that they have taken in order to make it on this day. As she pointed out their journey has been anything but normal, especially considering everything that their class has gone through with COVID-19.

Obama during her speech praised the students for having been able to remain committed to school during the pandemic and pushed for students to sign up for the federal student assistance form, FAFSA. As she pointed out, despite the lockdowns and pandemics taking away some of the classic high school experiences from the students, the students still managed to push through and focus on their studies and are now about to graduate.

She continued by stating that she knew how on days like this there were students who felt trepidation and nervous, especially if they were first-generation college students for their family, like she had been. As she pointed out it was easy to hear that voice inside one’s head that said they were unable to do it, and even write themselves off, but that they should not do this. She added that her goal was to ensure that all students understood how important it was to get an education beyond high school.

This year marks the tenth anniversary of the Reach Higher program launched by Obama.
