(TruthAndLiberty.com) – Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito stated that the emergence of pro-Palestinian demonstrations across college campuses in the United States has resulted in a decline in support for free speech.
During his commencement address at the Franciscan University of Steubenville in Ohio, Alito argued that there was a dangerous decline in freedom of speech. He pointed out that currently the world outside of this “beautiful campus” was being hit by “troubled waters” that were attacking the country’s “fundamental principles.” He added that freedom of speech was in decline, especially on University campuses where the exchange of ideas needed to be protected. However, as he argued this was an ideal that very few colleges were managing to live up to.
In over 400 universities across the United States students have been protesting and calling for their schools to divest from companies that are tied to Israel, as the war between Hamas and Israel continues.
Alito argued that religious freedom was “also imperiled.” He continued by pointing out that as the students ventured into the world they could find themselves in situations where they were being pressured to endorse ideas that went against their own beliefs, however as he encouraged them it would be up to them to continue to stand firm in the face of such adversities.
The Supreme Court is going to be making major rulings on an array of issues in the coming weeks, including whether or not former President Donald Trump should have complete immunity from prosecution.
