(TruthAndLiberty.com) – The Democrats in several cities are in disagreement over how they should deal with the surge of migrants that has resulted from Texas Governor Greg Abbott sending migrants via buses to sanctuary cities.

Abbot’s program is particularly focused on transporting migrants to Democratic-led “sanctuary cities” which have previously protected immigrants who lack the necessary documentation from being deported. In the 2023 fiscal year, there were over 2.4 million encounters along the southern border while two years earlier that number had been at 1.7 million.

Democratic leaders who tend to be pro-immigration policies have been particularly critical of the current situation and divided over how to handle the influx of migrants in their city. In Washington, D.C., Chicago, and New York City officials have been working to find enough housing and resources in order to tackle crime and homelessness. Some Democratic officials have also ended up changing their stance on immigration and have challenged the position and policies followed by the Biden administration.

On Thursday, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson had blocked an advisory ballot referendum which would provide voters with the option to choose whether or not the city should continue to be a sanctuary city. The proposal had first been brought forward by Alderman Anthony Beale, but originally it had not managed to pass the city council.

WFLD, a local television news station, pointed out that the lack of support from Johnson Is what caused the proposal to fail. The ballot would have asked the public whether they believe that limits to the funding provided in the city should be placed removing the sanctuary city categorization from Chicago.
