These threats surfaced following a court decision that disqualified former President Donald Trump from being listed on Colorado’s ballots in the upcoming presidential election. The court’s ruling was based on the insurrection clause of the U.S. Constitution’s 14th Amendment in relation to the events of January 6, 2021.
A representative from the Denver Police Department, while speaking to Fox News Digital, acknowledged the ongoing probes into these threats. However, specifics of the investigations were not disclosed, citing the ongoing nature of the cases and concerns for safety and privacy.
As a precautionary measure, Denver police have intensified patrols around the homes of the justices in the city and are ready to offer additional security support as necessary.
This development follows an analysis by the research group Advance Democracy, which indicated a rise in hostile online rhetoric from supporters of Trump, specifically targeting the justices and Democrats after the court’s decision. NBC News reported that this online hostility includes frequent mentions of the justices’ names on pro-Trump forums, along with suggestions to publicize their personal information.
Disturbingly, some online discussions on these forums have escalated to calls for violence against the justices and Trump’s political adversaries, encompassing threats of gun violence, hangings, bombings, and even civil war.
One particular post alarmingly advocated for beheading judges, while another ominously stated, “this ends when we kill these f—ers.” Additionally, Trump’s own social media platform, Truth Social, has seen users responding to his posts with similar aggressive language.
In response to this situation, the FBI released a statement to Axios, confirming their awareness and involvement in collaboration with local law enforcement. The FBI underscored its dedication to thoroughly investigating any threats or acts of violence fueled by extremist ideologies, irrespective of the underlying motivation.
