President Biden blasted a federal judge for his recent ruling in Texas which rejected the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) approval of an abortion pill.

In a statement released on Friday, Biden criticized the court for not following the expert approval in favor of a “political, ideological” attack. He further argued that the court had replaced the “expert agency” of the FDA which approved mifepristone, an abortion pill that has been available for over two decades and has been safely administered to millions of women across the United States and the World.

As he added if this ruling was to a stand, then effectively there would not be any prescription drugs already approved by the FDA that would “be safe from these kinds of political, ideological attacks.

U.S. District Judge Matthew Kacsmaryk, a Trump appointee, ruled that the FDA has rushed the approval process of the pill, and in doing so had violated a number of federal standards which could potentially mean that the drug was unsafe to be on the market.

The pill was first approved in 2000, after a four-year approval process. Mifepristone can be used for inducing an abortion up to 10 weeks into pregnancy, and can also be used for managing early miscarriages. In the United States, most abortions happen through medication instead of procedures, with two different drugs available in the market for inducing abortions.

Kacsmaryk gave the federal government one week in which they could appeal his decision and seek an emergency state prior to the ruling going into full effect. The Biden administration has already stated they would be appealing this decision.
