(TruthAndLiberty.com) – On Friday, Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.) made a jab at former President Donald Trump claiming that despite his many legal woes, Trump was getting “better” treatment than most criminal defendants in custody.
In the interview with MSNBC’s Katie Zhang, Swalwell argued that Trump was treated better than most other defendants, as the majority of defendants would have had their bail revoked if they acted as Trump did. He added that in the last year, there have been criminal and civil cases that have been stitching a “tapestry of accountability” and that this created a type of security blanket for the country’s democracy and rule of law.
Trump is facing a total of 91 criminal charges, in both different state and federal criminal indictments. Apart from these four criminal cases, he is also facing over half a dozen civil lawsuits, including one in New York dealing with his alleged fraudulent business deals. In several states, Trump is also facing cases that are seeking to have him removed from the presidential primary ballots.
Last year, Maine and Colorado both decided to disqualify Trump from the presidential race because of the “insurrection clause” in the 14th Amendment. Section 3 of the 14th Amendment specifically blocks anyone who has previously taken an oath of office to defend the Constitution from holding office again If they engage in insurrection. In Trump’s case, his alleged role in the Jan. 6, 2021, would be marked as the reason he violated the Constitution.
Trump has filed appealings towards both of these cases, and the Supreme Court has already agreed to examine the Colorado case.
