On Wednesday, former President Trump called for federal law enforcement agencies in New York to be defunded following his arraignment in connection to a New York investigation.

Trump took to Truth Social to write that “REPUBLICANS IN CONGRESS SHOULD DEFUND THE DOJ AND FBI UNTIL THEY COME TO THEIR SENSES.” This is a continuation of his allegations that the Democrats were weaponizing law enforcement agencies.

These remarks came only one day after he went to a Manhattan court for his arraignment in connection to an investigation by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg (D) relating to Trump’s involvement in the $130,000 hush money payment made to adult film star Stormy Daniels, ahead of the 2016 presidential election.

In the arraignment, Trump pleaded not guilty to 34 felony counts to what was described as “falsifying New York business records in order to conceal damaging information and unlawful activity from American voters before and after the 2016 election.”

Many of Trump’s allies, including Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.), have been pushing for agencies like the FBI to be defunded. This is despite the fact that Republicans have widely criticized the Democrats for their calls to defund the police following the death of George Floyd, a black man who died under the knee of a white police officer.

The arraignment comes at a time when Trump is the front runner of the 2024 GOP primary election, leading in many polls against both potential and declared candidates.
