Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) told reporters that Rep. George Santos (R-N.Y.) should not have a position in any top House committees. This was after he was directly asked about Santos on Wednesday.

Santos has recently come after fire for lying about his background. McCarthy’s response to the reporter’s questions about allowing Santos to sit in a key committee came while McCarthy was walking to a House Republican Steering Committee meeting. The meeting would focus on which Representatives would be selected to sit on each committee.

The committees that were being discussed on Wednesday included the Appropriations, Ways and Means, Financial Services, and Energy and Commerce committees.

When Santos had been asked about committee assignments on Tuesday he had said that he was willing to sit in any committee so long as he got to “Serve the people.”

However, despite what Santos has claimed, there are many who are calling for his resignation after it became apparent that he lied to “the people” in order to win the midterm elections. Republicans from Nassau County have been calling for his resignation and have even said that Santos is “disgraced.”

On Tuesday, two Democratic House members filed a complaint with the House Ethics Committee in which they claimed that Santos had failed to provide his financial disclosures within an appropriate time frame. This is not the only investigation and case against Santos as the Eastern District of New York and the Nassau County district attorney are also looking into his case.
