Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has criticized President Biden for how he is handling the District of Columbia crime bill, stating that he should have warned Democrats of his decision.
Pelosi said during a University of Chicago event on Friday that if Biden had known what he was going to be doing he should have informed the House members as it was hard for many of them to choose what to do regarding the bill. She added that it is also a hard vote for the Senate members and that even the mayor of the District of Columbia has a different opinion from the one the legislators who passed it had.
She continued to say that she is “a big supporter of statehood for the District of Columbia” and that for that reason she had voted in favor of the district. However, she pointed out that she understood why some people would vote against it and added that if the President knew this was what he was going to do then he should have given the House a “heads up.”
On Thursday Biden met with Senate Democrats and informed them that he was not going to sign the resolution. However, House Democrats have criticized this move as they claim that they had not received any prior warning of this. They noted that this was a big mess up on the White House’s end.
