On Sunday, during a segment on ABC’s “This Week” former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, while discussing President Biden’s popularity, asserted that the only Republican that Biden would be able to beat in the 2024 presidential election is Donald Trump. He added that in his opinion the issue that will help determine the success of the party is going to be the economy.

Christie, a Republican, has been one of the most vocal critics of Trump in the past few months and especially following the former President’s recent indictment and arraignment. During his appearance on “This Week,” Christie also noted that regardless of what Trump says most people do not want to see someone who has been indicted by the President. He added that while he might be getting short-term boosts from within his own party because of the case, at the end of the day the indictment is not going to be positive.

On Tuesday afternoon, Trump surrendered to the Manhattan courthouse where he was arraigned on 34 counts of falsifying business records in connection to Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s probe into the hush money payment made to Stormy Daniels prior to the 2016 presidential election. Trump is the first U.S. President in history to be indicted.

In recent polls following the indictment, Trump has been trailing Biden or falls within the margin of error. A YouGov poll on Thursday showed Biden leading by two points in a hypothetical match against Trump. The margin of error for that poll was 3.3. percent.
