Trump’s Approval CRASH: Historic Low Alert

President Trump’s second-term approval ratings have plummeted to historic lows, with even his own Republican base showing cracks that could spell disaster for the 2026 midterms.

Story Snapshot

  • Trump’s approval has dropped to 36-39%, matching his worst first-term numbers
  • Republican support fell to 84%, down 7 points from earlier highs
  • Independent voters have abandoned ship at 25% approval, an 8-point drop
  • Democrats now lead by 5.3% in generic 2026 House ballot polling
  • Economic concerns and government shutdown blamed for the decline

The Honeymoon Ends With a Government Shutdown

Trump began his second term in January 2025 with approval ratings above 50% and broad Republican support. The optimism didn’t last. By December, multiple polling organizations recorded approval ratings between 36% and 39%, with the ongoing government shutdown serving as the final nail in the coffin of his early second-term popularity.

The Economist/YouGov poll from December 20-22 shows Trump underwater by 19 points, while Gallup confirms his approval at just 36%. These numbers represent his lowest second-term ratings and match the depths he experienced during his first presidency’s most turbulent moments.

Republicans Begin to Waver

The most telling sign of trouble comes from within Trump’s own party. Republican approval, while still at 84%, has dropped 7 percentage points from its earlier peaks. More troubling for Trump, non-MAGA Republicans show clear signs of frustration, with 59% opposing symbolic moves like renaming the Kennedy Center.

This erosion among the GOP base differs significantly from first-term dynamics. Previously, Republican support remained rock-solid even during controversies. The current decline suggests deeper dissatisfaction with Trump’s governing approach rather than mere media criticism.

Economic Reality Bites Back

Voters aren’t buying Trump’s policy victories. Despite achievements on border security, tax cuts, and brokering an Israel-Hamas ceasefire, 74% of Americans rate the economy as “fair” or “poor.” Even more damaging, 71% report prices have increased since inauguration, directly contradicting Trump’s campaign promises about economic improvement.

The disconnect between Trump’s priorities and voter concerns has become glaring. While 50% of voters cite inflation as their top concern, Trump continues focusing on immigration issues that rank lower on public priority lists. This misalignment has cost him dearly among independents, whose support has crashed to just 25%.

Midterm Warning Signs Flash Red

Perhaps most concerning for Republicans is the complete reversal in 2026 midterm prospects. Democrats now hold a 5.3% advantage in generic congressional ballot polling, a dramatic shift from the 2.6% Republican advantage in 2024. Congressional GOP approval has cratered to just 23%, making incumbents extremely vulnerable.

The government shutdown has amplified these problems, with voters blaming Trump over Biden by a 2-to-1 margin. Unlike previous shutdowns where blame was more evenly distributed, Trump owns this crisis entirely. The shutdown’s length and timing couldn’t be worse for Republican electoral prospects.
