John Bolton, who served as Trump’s national security adviser, during an interview with CNN on Tuesday disagreed with former President Donald Trump’s claims during his town hall last week that if he was still in office the Russian invasion of Ukraine would not have happened because of his ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin. He further argued that many world leaders in Russia, China, and North Korea did not have a favorable view of Trump.

Last Wednesday, during a CNN town hall, Trump claimed once again that had he still been in office in February 2022, Russia would not have invaded Ukraine. He proceeded to avoid saying who he would like to see win the war, only adding that if he was in office the conflict would be resolved in 24 hours.

Moderator Kaitlan Collins then proceeded to question how Trump would approach finding a solution so quickly, to which Trump argued he would do so by having a meeting with Putin and Ukrainian Volodymyr Zelensky.

Bolton in his own interview stated that he had been present during Trump’s meetings with world leaders and that those leaders in his opinion viewed Trump as “a laughing fool.” He added that the idea that Trump being in office would have stopped Putin from launching an invasion is “flatly wrong.” He proceeded to claim that “no rational person” believes that there is a way for the war in Ukraine to be resolved within 24 hours.

He further commented on Trump’s claims that he does not think in “terms of winning and losing” saying that this shows how much he is unaware of what this war is about and what its implications are for not only Ukraine but the world.
