What’s Next for Nancy Pelosi?
Many are questioning what Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) has ahead of her, even if the party does manage to win the upcoming midterm elections.
Pelosi, 82, had previously announced that she would be leaving her position at the end of the term, however, many Democrats suspect that she will follow through, especially if the House flips in the midterm elections. What will happen if the Democrats manage to retain their majority, though, is still up for debate.
If the Democrats can beat the odds, it will in large part have been because of Pelosi’s ability to fundraise successfully.
Rep. Ron Kind (D) has reportedly said that if Pelosi wins, then she will be asked to stay. Kind had previously been opposed to Pelosi getting the Speakership. He also added that if Pelosi does not end up staying, then there will have to be a lot of discussions to decide who is going to take up her position.
Recently, there has also been a push among Democrats for newer members to be allowed to take on these leadership positions. While Democrats have not heavily focused on this recently as they want to have a united front ahead of the midterm elections, the desire is still there.
Rep. Dean Phillips (D-Minn.) has said that there should be more diversity in both the party’s executive and legislative ranks.
If Pelosi was to attempt to hold on to her position, it would be unclear how many people would support her in her attempts.
Kind also spoke about how it is a positive thing for younger Democrats to start taking over.
