Many have been speculating about what Donald Trump’s announcement will mean for the number of criminal investigations that have been launched against him. However, the answer to that question might surprise most people, as Trump’s announcement will not have many effects on his legal battles.
Renato Mariotti, a former federal prosecutor, took to Twitter to point out that the Justice department had previously launched an investigation on Trump despite him being the former President. Therefore, it is unlikely that his announcement will change their probe.
Trump is currently facing a number of investigations ranging from looking into the events that followed the 2020 election, and the Jan. 6, 2021 attack, to investigations into his business’s financial handling. In Georgia Trump is facing an investigation into his efforts to overturn the election results in the state. As part of this investigation, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) and Trump’s former chief of staff Mark Meadows have been subpoenaed.
The Department of Justice (DOJ) has also sent the FBI to seize documents from Trump’s home which are considered to be evidence that he might have violated the Espionage Act. This is why some are seeing Trump’s announcement as an attempt to avoid all of the potential indictments that could be coming his way.
