Trump Says If He Doesn't Run, His Base Will Be Very Angry

(TruthandLiberty.com) – Will former President Donald Trump run again in 2024? For the better part of six months, the former president has been teasing his base, suggesting he might run while also indicating he might wait and see. On Wednesday, December 8, Trump offered more of the same in an interview with Conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt.

Hewitt asked Trump if he chooses not to run in 2024, which candidate the former president believes the Republican Party would get behind. Trump declined to answer the question about other potential 2024 presidential contenders. Instead, he said if he didn’t run, the base would be very angry with his decision. While Hewitt agreed with Trump, he stated someone still needs to be a standard-bearer for Republicans.

Trump suggested Hewitt was getting ahead of himself and the process. The former president said it’s too early to make predictions and added several good people could fit the bill without getting into specifics. Later in the show, Hewitt tried again to bait Trump into answering his initial question. This time, the radio host got specific and mentioned Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, and Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR).

Trump still wasn’t having it. He told Hewitt he’d respond in about a year. For months, Trump signaled he’d make an announcement after the 2022 midterm elections. Many political analysts believe Trump will base his decision on how well Republicans do in the election. If they win, he could be inoculated from another impeachment and is likely to run. If Democrats win, the former president may shy away and get behind another candidate.
