(TruthAndLiberty.com) – On Monday former President Donald Trump called for the United Auto Workers of America (UAW) to endorse him arguing that President Joe Biden’s support for electric vehicles was going to drive the industry “out of business.”
In a post on his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump addressed the UAW only a few days before the 150,000 union workers it represents go on strike against three large carmakers in the country. The strike is expected to go through unless negotiators and manufacturers reach a deal. The existing contracts with Stellantis, Ford Motor, and General Motors are going to be expiring right before midnight on Thursday.
In 2020 the UAW had backed Biden’s campaign, however, thus far it has not endorsed any candidate in the 2024 presidential election. They are the only major union to have not yet announced their endorsement which has led to Trump trying to win the support of this key demographic.
Trump in his post stated that the UAW would soon be out of work because of Joe Biden’s insistence on switching to all-electric vehicles that are being built in China. He added that this was why the union needed to support Trump.
In May, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) released a proposal of new emissions rules that would mandate that by 2031, 67 percent of all the vehicles sold in the country would need to be electric. The standards are not finalized and many in the auto industry have pointed out that the proposal is unrealistic.
