Former Defense Secretary Mark Esper said on Wednesday that former President Donald Trump is not fit for running for office again in 2024. During an appearance on “CNN, This Morning” Esper noted that both parties should focus their attention on the “next generation of leaders” who could help unite the country and help solve key issues, instead of unifying people under personal attacks.

In reference to Trump’s announcement that he would be running for President again, Esper noted that he wishes Trump had not announced another bid for the White House. This is because Esper believes him to be “unfit for office.”

Despite this, he noted that the Trump administration had managed to have some successes in issues such as border security and even in appointing conservative judges. The Trump administration also notably lowered taxes, but these are not accomplishments that other Republicans haven’t completed without the “baggage,” and “self-centeredness” of Trump.
According to Esper, the midterm elections were also a clear indication that Trump was not in a position to win the elections. As he noted, Trump has been more helpful to the Democrats than to the Republicans.

Following the results of the midterm elections and the Republicans’ failure to materialize the anticipated “red wave,” many Republicans have become overly critical of Trump, saying that he has been to blame for the low quality of candidates. The Republicans had been hoping to gain control of both chambers of Congress, but instead, they lost the Senate, and are projected to win control of the House with a narrow majority.

Esper also noted that they should have won the Senate as well as managed to take over the House with a much larger margin. He added that conservative principles win elections and Donald Trump does not.
