Ron DeSantis Takes a Stand for Election Integrity in His State

Ron DeSantis Bravely Defends Election Integrity

( – In the 2000 presidential election, Florida became a laughingstock over election integrity as officials counted hanging chads to determine if Republican George W. Bush or Democrat Al Gore would become President of the United States. On Monday, April 25, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) said that 20 years ago, no one thought Florida would lead the way in conducting one of the most secure elections in the United States. A new Florida law commissioned a special state police unit to conduct investigations of alleged voter fraud and criminal election activity.

Senate Bill 524 created the Office of Election Crimes and Security under the Florida Department of State, made voter ID requirements stronger by requiring election officials to perform yearly maintenance on voter rolls, and made ballot harvesting a state felony.

DeSantis said the state needed the new police unit to ensure specialized law enforcement officials receive thorough training in election security and integrity.

A federal judge recently ruled parts of a previous Florida election law were unconstitutional and required the state to seek the federal government’s approval before enacting new laws. On Monday, DeSantis said he believed the higher courts would uphold the new laws the lower court judge ruled against in late March.
