(TruthAndLiberty.com) – Caden Schaefer-Rose, who will be 18 by the upcoming November election in the U.S., is eagerly preparing to vote for the first time, planning to support Donald Trump. As a high school student, he represents a segment of young voters who are diverging from the expected liberal tendencies of their age group and are expressing support for Trump.
Wearing mirrored sunglasses at a “Youth VoteFest” event near the Republican National Convention, Schaefer-Rose shared with AFP his alignment with Trump, citing a connection that began when he first noticed Trump on TV during the 2016 campaign. Other young attendees recalled Trump’s presence in popular culture, like his cameo in “Home Alone 2” or his role in “The Apprentice.”
Matthew Paley, 19, from New Jersey, echoed a similar sentiment while playing games outside the convention venue. Having met Trump in Florida, Paley voiced his admiration and support for the former president, acknowledging an initial attraction to Trump’s humor before recognizing deeper political alignments, especially concerning conservative values like gun rights.
Despite the historical trend of young Americans favoring the Democratic Party, signs suggest a shift might be occurring. Pew Research noted a decrease in the Democratic advantage among voters under 30 from a 30-point margin in 2016 to 24 points in 2020. With college student voting on the rise, Republican efforts to engage this demographic are intensifying.
The GOP is making targeted appeals to young voters, evident from their choice of J.D. Vance, a 39-year-old, as Trump’s running mate, and their invitation to social media influencer Amber Rose to speak at the convention. Efforts also include outreach to young Black voters, demonstrated by rapper Forgiato Blow’s appearance at the event.
Amidst these dynamics, Charlie Kirk, founder of the youth-focused Turning Point USA, criticized the Biden administration’s approach to young Americans’ aspirations, while promoting Trump’s vision of the American dream, which he argues is unyielding and robust.
Xavier Starks, a soon-to-be 18-year-old from Wisconsin, is contemplating supporting Trump, acknowledging some of Trump’s effective actions despite reservations about his rhetoric and approach.
As the political landscape continues to evolve, young conservatives express concerns about national issues such as debt, homeownership, interest rates, and immigration, factors that are shaping their political leanings. Former Senator Heidi Heitkamp notes the challenge for the oldest presidential candidates in history to resonate with young voters and address their specific concerns effectively.
