Outgoing Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi recently talked about the chaos that has ensued as the House is trying to elect her potential successor. Rep-elect. Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., has so far failed to secure the required votes to win the Speakership after the sixth ballot on Wednesday.

Late Wednesday night, following the House adjourns for the day, Pelosi said that Republicans needed to drop their “cavalier attitude in electing a new Speaker” which as she said is “disrespectful and unworthy of this institution.”

She added that those who work in the House need to be open and committed to performing the “People’s work.” She continued to say that “all who serve in the House share a responsibility to bring dignity to this body.”

However, her tweet caused backlash especially in terms of her statement that Representatives need to bring dignity to the body. Many have criticized her words and pointed to how Pelosi had opted to criticize former President Trump’s State of the Union address in 2020.

Other users also said that having failed votes is part of democracy and if those Representatives feel that obstructing Congress is necessary for some reason then that is also the “people’s work.”

The House is going to reconvene on Thursday and start the seventh round of voting.
A GOP aide also confirmed that McCarthy was working with members of the House Freedom Caucus and trying to come up with an agreement that would help sway their votes in his favor.
