( – In an interview with The Washington Post, former Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) argued that Vice President Kamala Harris is a “safeguard” should the GOP attempt to challenge the results of the 2024 presidential election if President Joe Biden wins.

She added that one that day they would have “the vice president” which was a safeguard. Pelosi’s comments were meant to address the possibility of the Congressional Republicans attempting once again to challenge the presidential election results in the way they had done in 2020 when Biden had defeated former President Donald Trump. Then-Vice President Mike Pence had been pressured by Trump to not certify the election results.

Pelosi in her statement argued that she does not believe that the Republicans in 2024 would attempt to engage in the way they had done in 2020. Her comments come on the same day as Trump’s first visit to the U.S. Capitol since Jan. 6, 2021, the day of the Capitol attack when hundreds of his supporters had stormed the building in an attempt to block the certification of the election.

Trump along with several Republicans has already started to prepare the ground and spread seeds of doubts regarding the upcoming election.

In May, Trump stated in a comment to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that he would be happy to accept the presidential election result, so long as everything is “honest.” Trump has maintained that he was the winner of the 2020 election in Wisconsin, despite the fact that Biden had won by 21,000 votes.
