Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) blasted Mike Pence on Wednesday night after Pence, the former vice president, said that if the Republican party won the majority in Congress, they would do everything in their power to “protect the right to life”. In response to this Ocasio-Cortez tweeted that no one was interested in hearing Pence’s plans about “their uterus”.
This incident took place only days after President Biden announced that if the Democrats won the Senate, then the first bill he would introduce to Congress would allow them to codify Roe v. Wade.
In a tweet on Tuesday night, Pence said that if they managed to have a pro-life majority in Congress then they would make sure to block the availability of abortions. He also added that this has a cause that they would make sure to bring to every state in America.
In response to this tweet, Ocasio-Cortez said that no one was interested in Pence’s plans for other people’s uteruses.
Ahead of the upcoming midterm election, Democrats have tried to make abortion rights a key topic in their campaigning after Roe v. Wade was overturned in June by the Supreme Court. The midterm election will determine the breakdown of both the House and Senate.
The Supreme Court’s decision led to a lot of outrage from those on the left. In the meantime, many on the right have been openly celebrating this decision and have been calling for states to also proceed with banning abortions.
According to a FiveThirtyEight poll, Democrats are currently expected to maintain their majority in the Senate but not in the House.
