Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) has so far refused to state whether or not she would support President Biden if he chose to seek reelection in 2024. The statement by Ocasio-Cortez was given during an interview with CNN ahead of the State of the Union address.
Ocasio-Cortez said that she has a lot of respect for the primary process and she would never want to forget about it as it had been what allowed her to win her position. She did say that if Biden becomes the Democratic nominee then she will “enthusiastically support him.”
She added that she was hoping to see Biden bring “big” and “bold” legislative proposals during the state of the Union address and talk about the importance of setting a plan for taxing the rich. She added that Biden should also focus on racial justice, climate change, and abortion rights.
She noted that for any candidacy the most important thing to focus on is the plans for the future. While Biden has not yet officially launched a reelection campaign, he and his staff have maintained that he is fully intending on running again in 2024.
So far, no Democrats have challenged Biden even though the polls show that most Democratic voters would like to see someone else nominated in 2024. This is a rather rare thing for an incumbent president.
Former President Trump has already announced that he was running for the White House in 2024, however, other Republicans are expected to also join the race.
