(TruthAndLiberty.com) – On Tuesday, Reps. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) stated that they intend to bring forward a resolution that is going to deal with the increase in ethics concerns related to the U.S. Supreme Court.
The two serve on the House Oversight and Accountability Committee where Ocasio-Cortez is a ranking member while Raskin is a vice-ranking member. During a committee roundtable where they discussed the concerns regarding ethics in the Supreme Court, they told MSNBC anchor Chris Hayes that they had talked about different “avenues” that hold the justices accountable.
On Sunday night, Ocasio-Cortez argued that it was not a question of whether or not Congress had jurisdiction over the Supreme Court but rather it was a question of which of their powers they would use in order to rein in a court that has gone “rogue” as there is no accountability. She further pointed out that Raskin and herself are going to be introducing legislation that would have the Supreme Court subjected to the $50 gift rule that all Congress members are subject to.
Over the past year, there have been several reports that have come out about Justices failing to disclose luxury gifts and trips., The reports have resulted in heightened interest in the type of gifts that the justices have received.
The Democrats in the Senate Judiciary Committee have also been pushing for legislation to go through that would allow them more oversight over the Supreme Court. Raskin pointed out that the country’s highest court had the lowest ethical standards and justices are the only government officials that don’t have to abide by an ethics code.
