(TruthAndLiberty.com) – Oakland, California authorities are being asked to “declare a state of emergency” because of the surge in the crime rates which has had a devastating impact on minority communities.

The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) Oakland branch issued a statement in which they are slamming the leadership and the movement pushing for law enforcement to be defunded while adding that police are necessary. As they pointed out in their call for the declaration of “a state of emergency” the local District Attorney has failed to prosecute those who have been involved in serious crimes.

Cynthia Adams, the president of the branch, told Newsweek in a separate statement that police were needed.

In many U.S. cities, there has been a large increase in crime rates in the past few years. Many experts have claimed that the crime increase has been a result of the COVID-19 pandemic and the calls for the police to be defunded after George Floyd’s murder in May 2020. The FBI statistics have shown that in 2020 there were 21,000 murders, this is the largest figure since 1995.

The statement by the Oakland NAACP was also signed by Acts Full Gospel Church Bishop Bob Jackson who argued that the residents of Oakland were tied to the public safety crisis which affected minority communities disproportionately. He added that there has been an increase in home invasions, armed robberies, and highway shoutouts. He noted that they were calling for elected officials to unite and declare a state of emergency in order to acquire the necessary resources to deal with this crisis.
