In an interview, Former Vice President Mike Pence said that whichever GOP member gets elected into the oval office next will support having a national abortion ban.
During his interview with RealClearPolitics which was released on Wednesday, Pence said that he was confident that the next Republican president would “stand for the right to life.” He also noted that this is a cause that they needed to support in both state capitals and the nation’s capital.
He also said that it is really important for Republicans and conservatives to not shy away from the fight now. Pence is considered by many to be a potential 2024 presidential candidate. He is also one of the most outspoken GOP members regarding his support for anti-abortion policies.
During a speech he gave in South Carolina in July, he also said that this would be the opportunity for the country to become unified, not that Roe v. Wade has been overturned.
He said that post-Roe they needed to not rest and to continue to push for the right to life which should be restored throughout American law in every single state.
The latest remarks Pence made came after Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) introduced Tuesday legislation that would ban abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy. The ban would also have all those who violate it imprisoned.
Following the Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe v. Wade, many GOP-led states have now had their abortion bans implemented.
After Graham’s proposed legislation, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said that most senators wished for the topic of abortions to be handled on a state level.
Pence has also dismissed any concerns that the topic of abortion is going to lead to a bigger Democratic turnout in November. He said that he is confident that pro-life Americans have equal enthusiasm to the ones that pro-choice Americans have.
