(TruthAndLiberty.com) – On Wednesday, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) called for a change in leadership in the Secret Service following Saturday’s assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump during a campaign rally in Pennsylvania.
In a post on the social media platform X, McConnell argued that the assassination attempt had been an “attack” on U.S. democracy and that Americans deserved accountability and answers. He proceeded by stating that a change in Secret Service leadership would be an important step towards that.
Last weekend, a 20-year-old shooter opened fire on Trump during a rally. One of his bullets grazed the former President’s ear, while one attendee was killed and two others critically injured during the incident. This resulted in many questions about how the gunman had been able to access the nearby roof from where he had a clear line of sight to shoot at the former President. According to reports, the gunman was perched on a rooftop that was less than 150 yards away from Trump.
The Secret Service and its Director Kimberly Cheatle have received a lot of criticism over the past few days over the incident. House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) previously pushed for Cheatle to resign while also stating he would look to create a task force that would consolidate the investigations into the incident that he had described as “inexcusable.”
Following the shooting Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas has defended the Secret Service noting he has complete confidence in the agency. Despite his comments of support, the criticisms have continued.
