(TruthAndLiberty.com) – Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) has defended former President Donald Trump’s actions on Jan. 6, 2021, during the Capitol riot, claiming that all that Trump was attempting to do was push for a peaceful protest. He added that there was nothing in his actions that would merit the Department of Justice filing criminal charges against him.
On Wednesday, McCarthy told the press that he did not see how it would be possible for Trump to be “found criminally responsible.” He noted that he had not participated in any activity and that all he had done was instructed the American people to peacefully protest.
These remarks were made only one day after Trump took to his social media platform Truth Social to state that he had received a letter from the Justice Department informing him that he was the target of the criminal investigation into the 2021 Capitol attack. The probe is also looking into his efforts to overturn the presidential election results and remain in the White House.
Target letters are often considered an indication that an indictment is set to follow soon. McCarthy’s recent comments mark a departure from his comments after the Capitol attack when he had claimed that Trump “bears responsibility” for the actions that had been taken by his supporters and rioters.
McCarthy also revealed that he had spoken with Trump on Tuesday and that this was just one of the regular talks they have. He then suggested that Trump had felt frustrated for having received the letter.
