(TruthandLiberty.com) – Over a hundred days ago, world leaders met in Scotland at the COP26 meeting and struck a climate deal some said was too ambitious. Wealthier governments agreed to revisit emission goals in 2022. Still, the emerging threat of war in Europe, the ever-continuing COVID-19 pandemic and a global energy supply crisis are leading to worries that too many governments are allowing climate change issues to lose priority.
On Saturday, February 19, at the Munich Security Conference, US climate Envoy John Kerry told the media the growing tensions between Ukraine and Russia were a massive distraction to the climate change agenda. Most countries have made little progress since leaders left the Glasgow climate change summit last November, and Kerry is concerned some countries are not fulfilling their promises to bring down emissions. The former Secretary of State under President Barack Obama added war is the last thing anyone needs if the world hopes to reverse climate change.
Tackling climate change is a security threat that requires accelerated action even as international attention is focused on Russia and Ukraine, U.S. climate envoy John Kerry said on Monday during a visit to Cairo.

Representatives from countries worldwide expressed similar sentiments. Some went further and said the accord struck at COP26 is fragile. Still, on Sunday, in Cairo, Egypt, Kerry emphasized climate change was a national and international security threat as real as the threat of war. He urged nations to chew gum and walk simultaneously and added the climate requires faster action than governments are currently giving it.
