(TruthAndLiberty.com) – On Wednesday, the Trump campaign noted that they would not be committing to a vice presidential debate, citing that there was still uncertainty over who would be on the Democratic ticket.
Brian Hughes, a senior Trump campaign adviser, noted that they don’t currently know for certain who the Democratic nominee for the position is going to be which is why they cannot confirm a date that would be before the Democratic convention. He argued that doing so was going to be unfair to “Gavin Newsom, JB Pritzker, Gretchen Whitmer” or whoever ends up being Vice President Kamala Harris’ choice as running mate.
Earlier that day, the Biden campaign had announced that Harris had already accepted the CBS News invitation to participate in a debate against Sen. JD Vance (R-Ohio) who is Trump’s vice-presidential pick. The possible dates for the debate were decided to be August 12 or 13. CBS News had previously proposed for the debate to take place on July 23; however, such a date is unlikely as it is only one week after the Republican National Convention.
In a statement, Brian Fallon, the Biden campaign spokesperson noted that Trump is the one who claims to be willing to have a debate at any time and that he was the one who had specifically selected Vance because of his debating skills. However, following the recent leak which showed that Vance is supportive of a nationwide abortion ban, he is now unwilling to debate against Harris who for the last two years has prosecuted cases relating to reproductive freedom.
