Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has been accusing Republicans of looking for ways to “steal the next presidential election.”
Clinton, who was not able to secure a win in the 2016 election against former President Donald Trump, released a promotional video last week for the progressive advocacy group Indivisible. In the video, Clinton said that right-wing extremists were already plotting how they would be able to steal the 2024 election. She also noted that the right-wing-controlled Supreme Court could potentially provide states with the legislative powers to “overturn presidential elections.”
Currently, the Supreme Court is hearing a case that would potentially provide more power to state legislatures. The case, Moore v. Harper, came from North Carolina and relates to the state court’s decision to invalidate congressional redistricting.
North Carolina lawmakers have been arguing that according to the U.S. Constitution the state legislatures are the only ones allowed to regulate federal elections. This means that they would not need the state courts or state constitutions to have oversight.
According to Clinton, if the Supreme Court rules in favor of the state, then the 2024 presidential election could be stolen as Republican-controlled state legislatures would be able to make decisions. She argued that instead of the popular vote or the Electoral College, the state legislatures would be the ones to decide who wins.
The former secretary of state is supporting Indivisible as they are trying to prevent this from occurring.
