GOP Governor Says DeSantis Broke Republican Principle by Targeting Disney

GOP Governor Slams DeSantis Over Controversial Power Move

(TruthandLiberty.com) – In late March, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R) signed legislation that banned discussions with kindergartners through third grade about sexual orientation or gender identity issues. In response, Disney, Florida’s largest employer, paused all political donations in the state and said the governor should have never signed the legislation into law. Company executives said Disney would pursue the bill’s repeal politically or in court.

DeSantis pushed back, and the GOP legislature moved to strip Disney of its self-governing powers in the state. Republicans argued Disney shouldn’t get special tax breaks just because it’s Disney.

Recently, Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson (R) told CNN he supports Florida’s law protecting young children. Yet, he couldn’t support DeSantis’ punitive move to strip Disney. Hutchinson argued the government shouldn’t punish a private business over political disagreements with the government. He added it was the wrong approach to take and claimed it violated the GOP’s traditional view of limited and restrained government.

This incident isn’t the first time Hutchinson has broken from Republicans. After moving to ban mask mandates in Arkansas, the governor later said he regretted signing the bill into law and wanted the legislature to reverse it. If not, the governor hoped the courts would reverse it.
