The mayor of East Palestine, Ohio, criticized President Biden’s decision to arrange a surprise visit to Kyiv, Ukraine, saying that Biden’s visit was the “biggest slap in the face” as East Palestine continues to deal with the problems caused by the train derailment and chemical spill in the area.

East Palestine Mayor Trent Conaway appeared on Fox News to give his thoughts about the international trip that Biden took, which included a surprise visit to Kyiv on Monday and a visit to Warsaw, Poland following that.

Conaway told host Jesse Watters that seeing this move by Biden was “the biggest slap in the face” and it showed that Biden “doesn’t care about us.” He added that while Biden can send “every agency he wants” he also discovered during a briefing that Biden was providing Ukraine with millions more dollars in funding instead of providing funds to East Palestine.

He added that Biden chose to visit Ukraine during President’s Day which truly exhibits the “kind of guy he is.”

Biden’s visit to Kyiv included a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. The visit took place only days before the first anniversary of the Russian invasion. Biden said that this trip was designed to show the U.S. continuous support to Ukraine. During the visit, he also announced that $500 million in aid would be sent to Ukraine.

Biden has been criticized by many prominent Republican figures for choosing to make an international trip instead of focusing on the domestic issues that are currently plaguing the U.S.
