(TruthandLiberty.com) – Before the COVID-19 pandemic emerged in March 2020, the Associated Press (AP) reported approximately 3% of parents homeschooled their kids. After schools shut down for months and re-opened under a haze of uncertainty and COVID-19 mandates, many parents opted to continue homeschooling instead of sending their children back to the classroom.
The AP said the pandemic caused one of the fastest increases in homeschooling ever seen. Across 18 states, the number of homeschooling students increased by 63% in the 2020-2021 school year. This school year, the number only fell 17%. The article lists many likely reasons for the rise in homeschooling. Elevated rates of COVID-19 variants and a reduced quality of education as schools grew to rely more heavily on substitute teachers were among them.
The coronavirus pandemic ushered in what may be the most rapid rise in homeschooling the U.S. has ever seen. Now, even with schools back open and vaccines available, many homeschooling families are sticking with it. https://t.co/hB3DzSTQOv

The Los Angeles Times pointed to several other reasons ranging from mainstream middle-class families becoming disenchanted with pandemic-related school policies to mental health problems or woke issues such as critical race theory (CRT) and gender identity. Many parents are losing faith in the public school system to provide a good education for their children and can’t afford private schooling. Homeschooling meets their needs. Additionally, this option isn’t what it once was because many resources are available to parents who homeschool their kids now.
