According to a Wall Street Journal survey released on Wednesday in a hypothetical 2024 GOP primary match-up, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) would beat former President Trump by 14 points.
The survey specifically showed that around 52 percent of Republicans supported DeSantis while only 38 percent appeared to be in favor of Trump. DeSantis also appears to be benefiting from relatively high approval ratings as around 84 percent of Republicans appear to have a favorable view of him. Trump on the other hand has around 71 percent of Republicans saying that they view him positively.
DeSantis has also managed to build enough recognition around his name as only 10 percent of likely GOP primary voters noted that they did not have enough information about him to form an opinion.
Trump is the first major GOP candidate to have announced his campaign for 2024. Despite this, there are many top Republicans who are speculated to be considering running against Trump, with DeSantis being one of the biggest names being thrown around.
However, DeSantis has not yet made any announcements or given any indications that he is planning on running against Trump for the GOP primary.
Early polling shows that DeSantis is closing in on Trump and in certain areas he is even managing to gain the lead. According to a USA Today-Suffolk University poll, DeSantis is leading by 23 points among Republicans and Republican-leaning voters.
