Rep. Alexandria Ocasio Cortez, D-N.Y., stated that she believes Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is “weaker” than former President Donald Trump as a potential 2024 GOP nominee. According to recent polls, while Trump is increasing his lead against DeSantis in a hypothetical matchup for the 2024 GOP nomination, DeSantis appears to be performing much better against President Biden.

In an interview with MSNBC’s Jen Psaki, Ocasio-Cortez was asked if Trump winning the GOP nomination means that the Democrats have a higher chance of retaining control of the White House. In response, the Democratic representative who has often criticized the former President argued that DeSantis is in her opinion the “weaker” candidate.

She proceeded to argue that “Governor DeSantis has made some very large critical errors” which have resulted in him not being the stronger candidate. DeSantis is currently expected to launch a campaign for the 2024 presidential race within the next couple of months.

Ocasio-Cortez continued by claiming that “You can’t out Trump,” and that while DeSantis might attempt to win support with the base, “that base belongs to Donald Trump.” She further noted that DeSantis’ policies in Florida have become too extreme, despite his recent reelection win by close to 20 points in the 2022 midterm, and that people would no longer be able to see him as a “more rational” option than Trump. This is the one thing that Ocasio-Cortez believes could have made DeSantis competitive and yet he has now lost it.
