(TruthAndLiberty.com) – Two Democrat Senate Committee leaders want Justice Clarence Thomas investigated.
Senator Sheldon White House (D-Rhode Island), chairman of the Senate subcommittee on federal courts, and Senator Ron Wyden (D-Oregon), chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, are requesting Attorney General Merrick Garland appoint a special counsel to investigate possible ethics law and federal tax violations by Supreme Court Justice Thomas.
In a letter to Garland dated July 3, the Democratic senators allege there’s evidence to suggest Thomas had “secretly accepted gifts and income” worth millions since being appointed to SCOTUS in 1991.
According to Whitehouse and Wyden, there’s evidence pointing to Thomas possibly committing “numerous willful violations” of false statements and federal ethics laws.
The pair also speculate that Thomas and his affluent benefactors may not have adhered to federal tax responsibilities, citing ProPublica reports.
Two days before the July 3 letter, Thomas voiced his skepticism over whether the Department of Justice has the authority to appoint special counsels. That skepticism was part of his concurrence alongside the ruling that former Presidents have immunity from prosecution for actions they took while in office and presumptive immunity for other official acts.
In the concurrence, Thomas highlighted that if there isn’t a law “establishing the office that the Special Counsel occupies,” the Special Counsel couldn’t “proceed with this prosecution.”
Thomas highlighted that the Special Counsel was “a private citizen,” and therefore couldn’t “criminally prosecute anyone,” including a former President.
Meanwhile, House Republicans have pledged to investigate what they consider the alleged weaponization of government. They are focusing their efforts on the alleged abuse of the Justice system by Democrats and probing the alleged funding of corrupt departments they accuse of misusing their authority for political purposes.
