(TruthAndLiberty.com) – California Democratic Governor Newsom unveiled a new 28th Amendment to the Constitution that would enforce gun control safety measures. He further claimed that this Amendment has widespread bipartisan support.

On Thursday, Newsom stated that he was proposing the amendment which is going to enshrine the Constitution with common sense gun measures that are going to be supported by all, including Republicans and gun owners. He proceeds to state that his Amendment would not alter the Second Amendment in any way and instead would respect the country’s tradition of gun ownership.

In recent months federal courts have often ruled in favor of gun rights activists. This has in part been led by the Supreme Court’s landmark decision last year which brought down a century-old law in New York that had made the process of getting a concealed handgun license harder.

Newsom’s Amendment would not alter the Second Amendment in any way, but would instead increase the minimum age for gun ownership to 21, would make universal background checks mandatory for all those looking to purchase firearms, while also establishing a waiting period for “all gun purchases” and instituting an “assault weapons” ban. It would also give Congress, state, and local governments the right to create gun control measures.

In order for the Constitution to be amended Congress will need to pass the proposed amendment with a two-thirds vote in both chambers. It can also be amended if there is a convention of states under Article V.

Currently, it would be hard for an Amendment to gain the necessary support as the House is currently controlled by the Republicans, while the Democrats have the Senate majority.
