Church Leader Resigns After Allegations Over Women

( – Over the decades, many ministry leaders have resigned their positions in disgrace. Several prominent ministers have fallen from grace, including Mark Driscoll, Ted Haggard, Jim Bakker, and Jimmy Swaggart. Now, one of the world’s largest churches is feeling the sting. In January, an international pastor and founder of Hillsong Church in Australia quietly resigned from his position with a plea for forgiveness. This resignation isn’t the first time Pastor Brian Houston stepped away from the church over allegations of improprieties.

On March 18, the Hillsong Church Global board said it refrained from public comment while its former pastor worked through personal issues. In a post on Hillsong Church’s website, the board said it worked with Houston over the last 10 years after two women complained the pastor was improper toward them. In the first instance, Houston sent inappropriate text messages to a female staff member while under the influence of sleeping pills.

The second issue arose in 2019. Allegedly, the pastor was inebriated after taking more anti-anxiety pills than prescribed and mixing them with alcohol. After a Hillsong conference, Houston knocked on a hotel door not his own, entered the room, and spent time with a female. The board didn’t provide any other details. In a separate case in August, police arrested the former pastor for failing to provide evidence his deceased father committed sexual offenses against a child in 1969 and 1970.

Houston says he’s innocent of the charge. If found guilty by a jury, the former pastor could face up to five years in prison.
