Enthusiasm among Democrats has waned, but many are hoping that former President Obama is going to help turn the situation around again. Obama, who was not actively campaigning at the start of the midterm election cycle, has now been actively campaigning in favor of the Democrats who are widely expected to lose several seats in both the House and Senate.
Obama has criticized Republican lawmakers and the conspiracy theories run by the GOP which have allowed Republicans to benefit from write off for the cost of private jets on their tax returns.
Obama also joked during a Milwaukee rally, saying if people remembered when the craziest thing people said was regarding his birth certificate. Obama was in Milwaukee to support Mandela Barnes who is trying to gain a Senate seat in Wisconsin.
Some Democrats are hoping that Obama will be able to not only save the election but also President Biden’s low approval ratings.
Democratic strategist Christy Setzer said that Obama succeeded where Biden failed, in firing up the nation and making them more enthusiastic. She also added that Obama has an incredible ability to make Republicans appear small.
She continued to say that those reluctant to vote from the Democratic side, would be pushed to vote because of Obama.
However, it is important to note that Obama was not able to save Democrats in the 2010 or 2014 midterms, and even in 2016 he was not able to help Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton secure a victory.
One Democratic strategist said that it is not possible to always rely on Obama and that this is too late, as campaigning should have started three weeks ago, during early voting.
