(TruthandLiberty.com) – Since February 27, when Russia invaded Ukraine, over 3 million Ukrainians have fled their country. Some went to neighboring Poland, where the small country has limited resources to help refugees. Around 6,500 have resettled in the United Kingdom under a highly generous government program that pays homeowners each month if they host Ukrainians rent-free. Over 150,000 British residents have accepted the government’s offer of the program.
The plan was so successful that the government is considering resettling thousands of other non-Ukrainian refugees, including Afghans, on a similar program. Many Afghan refugees are living in hotels costing taxpayers much more. Officials say they’re struggling to convince local governments to house them.

There are concerns among many UK residents that the immigration system could cause societal problems. Some suggest rubber-stamping refugees and placing them in homes with strangers could lead to other issues. Officials expressed concern it could cause a national security crisis and all kinds of crimes — such as abuse of women, children, sex trafficking, and modern slavery by criminal gangs.
Some say the details about the program are few and that no one knows what the rules are if the relationship between the homeowner/sponsor and the refugee erodes. Refugees won’t be allowed to leave the sponsor and cannot receive government housing benefits. Could someone use homelessness as a threat against a vulnerable refugee or their family? It will certainly be interesting to see how the situation plays out in the coming months.
