(TruthandLiberty.com) – On Sunday, April 3, two shooters fatally shot six people and injured a dozen others in Sacramento, California, as they left bars and restaurants around 2 a.m. As has become customary in the wake of tragic shootings, Democrats at all levels of government called for crackdowns on guns. On Sunday evening, President Joe Biden expressed empathy for victims’ families and thanked first responders for their efforts.

As expected, Democrats at all levels of government called for more gun control. Still, Biden didn’t leave it there. He called for Congress to do more, including passing his gun crime reduction proposal. In 2021, Biden suggested:
- Adding gun trafficking strike forces
- Expanding community violence intervention programs
- Hiring more police to develop better community policing initiatives
- Banning ghost guns and requiring a background check on all gun sales
- Banning assault weapons and high-capacity magazines
- Repealing legal immunity and liability for gun manufacturers
It’s unclear how Biden’s proposals could have prevented the Sacramento shootings. California has some of the strictest gun laws in the country, including a ban on assault weapons, high-capacity magazines, and background checks on all gun sales. In June 2021, a federal court in San Diego struck down the prohibition on assault weapons.
It’s unlikely for any gun prohibitions to pass in Congress. Democrats have razor-thin majorities. In the evenly divided Senate, Democrats would need at least 10 Republicans to join them to enact gun legislation.
