John Sullivan was inside the Capitol building on that fateful day and shot a video of the riot, and Tayler Hansen is an independent journalist who found himself covering the event as it unfolded. Tayler watched Sullivan’s video and noticed something interesting. It captured Babbitt’s final moments before US Capitol Police Lt. Mike Byrd shot and killed her. Sullivan’s video shows that Babbitt attempted to stop the violence occurring in the Speaker’s lobby on four occasions, not join it. Sullivan asserts Babbitt was pleading with people not to vandalize the doors.
The story is a reminder that knee jerk reactions aren’t always the best indicators of reality. There may be many more stories like this one that the public doesn’t know anything about. If this story and others like it get wider attention, the Democratic narrative that all Republicans who were in Washington, DC on that fateful day are insurrectionists, could backfire.
