( – On Super Tuesday, pro-Palestinian demonstrators disrupted Rep. Adam Schiff’s, D-Calif, during his victory speech after he won his party’s nomination for a U.S. Senate seat.

The seat had previously been held for over three decades by former Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., who passed away last year. This resulted in Sen. Laphonza Butler (D) being appointed to fill the seat temporarily by Gov. Gavin Newsom.

During his victory speech, Schiff attempted to introduce his family however his speech was interrupted by demonstrators who were chanting “Free Palestine” and “cease-fire now.” The chants continued to grow significantly louder as the remarks of the lawmakers were drowned out.

During the protest, there was at least one person who security had escorted away from the stage.

Following the disruption Schiff addressed the demonstration arguing that they were lucky to be in a country with an active democracy that gave everyone the right to protest. He proceeded to argue that this was the kind of democracy that they needed.

On Tuesday the California Democrat claimed that he was in support of the Biden administration’s call for a cease-fire so long as it included the release of the Israeli hostages as one of the conditions. He added that his position is aligned with that of the administration which is why he believes that there needs to be a pause in the fighting and a deal that would secure the release of the hostages.

This statement comes close to five months after the Oct. 7 attack by Hamas which resulted in the group taking over 200 hostages. Since then Israel has retaliated by attacking Gaza which has resulted in the death of over 30,000 Palestinians according to reports.
